Licensing your business data to AI companies, by data type

Different AI companies want different records. Here's what buyers say they license for each kind of business data, why it's valuable, and how to prepare it.

Support tickets

A ticket with the customer's question, the agent's answers and the final outcome shows how problems actually get solved. Prism lists support conversations among the workflow traces it licenses, and AfterQuery names tickets and support. Prepare: keep the outcome field; exclude tickets that contain health or payment details.

Email and team chat

Threads where decisions were made, handovers happened and escalations were resolved are what buyers mean by "how work gets done". Mercor connects Slack, Teams, Gmail and Outlook; Handshake AI lists Gmail, Outlook and Slack among the sources it buys. Prepare: decide which channels and mailboxes are in scope, and leave private messages and HR correspondence out.

CRM history

Deal stages with dates, call notes and especially the reasons deals were won or lost. micro1 lists CRM data and sales processes; Mercor connects Salesforce. Prepare: check customer contracts before including their details.

Code

Repositories with pull-request discussion and review history show how engineers reason, not just what they shipped. Turing's Project Lazarus buys codebases with their wider operating record; Mercor connects GitHub. Prepare: strip secrets and keys, and check third-party and client code licences.

Documents, SOPs and finance records

Procedures, knowledge bases, project histories and, for some buyers, finance workflows. micro1 lists SOPs, internal documentation and knowledge bases; AfterQuery includes finance; Handshake AI lists QuickBooks among its sources. Prepare: keep pricing and strategy documents out if you want them private.

Choosing which AI company

  • Eligibility: staff numbers, years of history and whether closed companies are accepted.
  • Exclusivity: whether the licence shuts out other buyers.
  • Payment shape: one payment, an upfront fee plus a share, or payment on delivery.
  • Where the data goes: micro1, for example, licenses only to buyers in the US and allied countries.
  • Compare eight programmes in our buyer comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Can we license just one department or system?

Yes. AfterQuery says many partnerships start with one department, and Prism says participation can be scoped to specific workflows or historical datasets.

Do AI companies need live access to our systems?

Some programmes connect to your tools directly; Mercor and Prism describe connectors. Others take an export. Preparing and de-identifying a copy inside your own systems first keeps the originals under your control.

Programmes that publish terms include micro1, Handshake AI, Turing, AfterQuery, Scale AI, Labelbox Prism and Mercor, plus marketplaces such as Troveo. See our comparison for what each asks for.
